2013-2014 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing Contest

Theme: “Leaving a Legacy – Realizing the Dream”

Contest Guidelines:

  • Must be the original work of the student and have been written during the current school year.
  • Entries may be prose or poetry.
  • May only submit one entry in either an argumentative or expository mode.
  • Entries must not exceed 500 words.

Your writing should display an understanding of what it means to leave a legacy and how leaving a legacy can and does realize Dr. King’s dream. You may also explain the meaning of the theme in detail including specific real-world examples or they may present an argument about the need for legacies in order to realize Dr. King’s dream. You could also describe the impact of legacies in you communities as a way of realizing Dr. King’s dream of equality.

The writing should go beyond the details of Dr. King’s biography and the words contained in his “I Have a Dream” speech.

School writing submissions are due Monday, December 2, 2013. Top three winners will be submitted to the district.

District winners will receive recognition at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools MLK, Jr. Student Awards Ceremony to be held on Thursday, January, 16, 2014. Winners have a chance to win a monetary price of $250.

To enter, print off the Entry Permission Form from MLK Writing Contest 2013 (page 2 of the document), fill it out, and return it to QHMS with your writing submission.
